Packard stared at the closed front door, his throat tight, unable to move even when his brother’s hand landed on his shoulder. Bradford tightened his grip and forcibly turned him around.

“I think she just needs space,” he said. “This is a big change in your relationship.”

Change? It felt like an end to it.

“She called us ‘friends’.” And though that’s what they’d always been, it wasn’t good enough now. “Amanda and I never ... you know,” he tossed on the end.

Bradford lowered his hand to his side. “I believe you.”

“She doesn’t believe me.” Packard jerked his chin toward the door.

“Hey, little brother ...” Jarek entered the foyer. He skidded to a halt, his brow furrowing. He opened his mouth to speak.

“Don’t,” Packard said. “Whatever you’re thinking, don’t say it. Let’s go plan Mom’s party. Have you told her I’m here?”

Jarek stood motionless for a moment, then lowered his arms and shook his head. “No, we thought it should be a surprise, since it was one to us.”

“Good. I want to surprise her. Now ... the biggest surprise is going to be if I have a job next week. Head back to the kitchen, and I’ll meet you there in a few. First, I need to make a phone call.”

Without waiting on their consent, Packard set off down the hall. He zipped in the bathroom, shut the door, and dialed his office. “Evelyn. It’s Packard. I need to speak to Mr. Jones. Thanks.”

His boss’s deep voice rumbled through the phone. “Benton Jones.”

“Sir, Packard Barrows.”

“Packard? You are calling from outside the office?”

Packard leaned against the counter, stretching his legs in front of him. “Yes, sir. I’m in Florida for what was supposed to be a weekend trip.” He made a shallow breath. “I intended to come home yesterday, but was caught in the late season hurricane that blew through.”

“I saw that on the news and wondered how it’d impact your family.”

“They’re fine,” he replied. “Long story short, I need a couple days. My mother’s eightieth birthday is tomorrow, a fact I had forgotten and ...”

“You cannot possibly miss her birthday,” Mr. Jones said. “I will have Evelyn move your appointments.”

“Thank you, sir. I appreciate the understanding.”

“We will see you at the end of the week?”

“Yes, sir.”

His phone at his side, the call over, he straightened and turned in a circle, meeting his reflection in the mirror.

Confidence had gotten him through college and a parade of interviews. He’d known who he was and what he wanted then. Benton Jones had seen that and hired him on the spot.

He liked his job. Though number crunching wasn’t many people’s cup of tea, the black and white of it appealed to him. He liked seeing people’s investments prosper and knowing their nest egg would become something they could use in the future.

Somehow, in working with other peoples’ futures, he’d missed thinking about his own. Honestly, he’d never pictured his life without Trinity in it, but her place hadn’t been set until now. Now, what he wanted, what he saw about them was slipping through his fingers, with him powerless to stop it.
